AfroerotiK

Erotic provocateur, racially-influenced humanist, relentless champion for the oppressed, and facilitator for social change, Scottie Lowe is the brain child, creative genius and the blood, sweat, and tears behind AfroerotiK. Intended to be part academic, part educational, and part sensual, she, yes SHE gave birth to the website to provide people of African descent a place to escape the narrow-mined, stereotypical, limiting and oft-times degrading beliefs that abound about our sexuality. No, not all Black men are driven by lust by white flesh or to create babies and walk away. No, not all Black women are promiscuous welfare queens. And as hard as it may be to believe, no, not all gay Black men are feminine, down low, or HIV positive. Scottie is putting everything on the table to discuss, debate, and dismantle stereotypes in a healthy exchange of ideas. She hopes to provide a more holistic, informed, and enlightened discussion of Black sexuality and dreams of helping couples be more open, honest, and adventurous in their relationships.

This is my ode/scathing political commentary about the total ambivalence, the completely narcissistic and self-absorbed society we have become and how we have let capitalism and complacency replace a real need to stand up, speak out, to not go gently into that good night. I wrote it in 2006 and I’ve updated it to fit the times. Sadly, I suspect I will probably have to update it again in another 8 years with even more examples of how we are only motivated to act by the media telling us when to do so. Those who most need to read this never will. It’s too long for them. Those who need to hear the message most will not even look at it because it doesn’t have pictures. They wouldn’t even understand it if they did. We live in a society of dumbed-down and anesthetized by the media to only relate to something in sound bites and tweets. This poem was derived from Gil Scott Heron’s poem The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. For the intellectually curious (HAHAHA, I know, I’m funny, right?) and those of the original piece, or for those who might be mildly curious, you can hear the original here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnJFhuOWgXg
